Accessing Housing for Women

Women in need of stable, affordable housing are invited to attend the first
in a series of free workshops aimed at building skills in empowerment, money
management and leadership.

According to the Women’s Housing Advocacy Group, 56% of Canada’s low-income
population is women. Women are the “hidden homeless”, often compromising the safety
of themselves and their children by remaining in unsafe situations to keep ‘a roof over
their heads’. The West Kootenay region has some of the highest rates of child poverty in
Canada, a strong indicator of near homelessness, if not outright homelessness, of their mothers.

Habondia’s Community W.I.S.H. Project is a unique two-year project focusing on the
needs of women seeking housing security, as well as mature women facing escalating
home ownership costs on fixed incomes. The project also addresses the need of all
women for financial and asset building knowledge. The project is funded by Status of
Women Canada.

Pre-registration is required for the workshop, which will be held in Nelson Thursday,
March 18th, from 9 am to 2 pm. Childcare and transportation subsidies available. Call
(250) 352-6688 to register or for further information.

The W.I.S.H. Project is an acronym for Women In Sustainable Housing. The project is
sponsored by the Circle of Habondia Lending Society, a local not-for-profit organization
that began in 1998 to provide micro-lending and investing opportunities to women in the
West Kootenay.
